Kimberly ASouth London artist Kimberly Anne is a unique breed. A cursory glance at her ever expanding Twitter profile shows a young lady not hugely interested in creating any sense of false mystique, preferring to breakdown any idea of a boundary between artist and fan. It’s made her a whole heap of new friends in the process.

To celebrate the release of her last EP, Hard As Hello, Kimberly put on a release party at London’s Social. Such was the demand from the hundreds stuck outside, that she had to perform twice on the same night to ensure everyone went home happy. It’s the personal touch that has stood Kimberly in such fine stead.

The Liar EP finds Kimberly returning to the studio with a selection of acclaimed producers, Mark Crew (Bastille), Rich Wilkinson (Lianne Le Havas, Bombay Bicycle Club), and Charlie Hugall (Florence & The Machine, Ed Sheeran, Lucy Rose). Similarly to Hard As Hello, Liar is a melody rich tune that is driven predominantly by Kimberly’s vocal inflections, aided by an acoustic guitar and a propulsive drum beat, used sparingly. The percussion parts are mainly built up of Kimberly thrashing the hell out of some empty water cooler bottles.

Almost On My Feet was originally written when Kimberly set herself a challenge to write and record a song in under four hours. “Someone much cleverer than I once said that ‘artists don’t finish their work, they abandon it’. It’s true that I could go back and tweak my work forever and then nothing ever quite feels finished. So this was good discipline for me to leave things as natural as possible.” Recalls Kimberly.

Having grown up fascinated by the music of The Cure, Bloc Party, and Tracy Chapman and the narrative rapping of Nas and Common. She started out performing at the local South London poetry nights, but a tender word from an encouraging booker broke the news to Kimberly that performing with a keyboard is, really, more musician than poet, forcing her to admit she had quite accidentally become a songwriter.

The Liar EP is another short, sharp body of work that continues the rolling narrative of Kimberly Anne as a unique and intriguing young British musician, and one keen to have a healthy dose of fun along the way.
